is a Project Leadership SeriesSM Web’n Learn session designed to help project management practitioners do a better job of problem-solving in the project environment. This web’n learn will focus on countering the challenges teams encounter while dealing with issues.  Primarily, we will address better practices in defining the real issue through the formulation of a problem or opportunity statement.  This technique helps the team better articulate the opportunity/threat while considering factors such as the organizational impacts and technology implications.

Course Baseline

“Prior proper planning prevents painfully poor performance.”  That statement is a variation (or, “clean version”) of an old British Army adage that applies to all walks of life.  In particular, effective project management requires a great deal of preparation and forethought as well.  Though the hope is to minimize exposure to project issues through proper risk management and planning, project teams will encounter things that occur beyond their scope of control.

The Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (The PMBOK Guide®, 5th edition) defines an issue as “a point or matter in question or in dispute, or a point or matter that is not settled and is under discussion over which there are opposing views or disagreements.” Therefore, resolving project issues in an effective manner plays an integral role in adequately managing stakeholders’ expectations.
